Third innings bite Softball in losses vs #24 Carson-Newman

Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College softball team fell via mercy rule in both ends of a double header with 24th-ranked Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference action at Whitley Field on Thursday afternoon.

GAME ONE | Carson-Newman 12, Catawba 2 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Carson-Newman out-hit Catawba 14-3

- The Eagles hit the lone homer and the only two extra-base hits of the game

- C-N committed the lone error of the contest

- Carson-Newman left five on base; Catawba stranded nine

- The Eagles' staff allowed two runs on three hits and six walks, striking out two; Catawba's staff allowed 12 runs on 14 hits and two walks, striking out two

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Lainey Ruscoe pitched the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run on just one hit

FIRST INNING

- Grace Gregory's three-run home run started the scoring for the Eagles in the first

THIRD INNING

- A hit-by-pitch and two singled loaded the bases for Carson-Newman in the third

- A bases-loaded walk, two RBI singles and a sac fly made it 7-0 Carson-Newman

- Three consecutive RBI singles with the bases loaded pushed their lead to 10-0

- Addie Saunders' two-run double scored the eighth and ninths run of the frame, with the Eagles up 12-0

FOURTH INNING

- Catawba scored its first run with a hit-by-pitch and three walks

- Monroe's sac fly to center field scored another

SECOND INNING

- A throwing error scored the Eagles' second run in the second

- Saunders' two-run single with two outs pushed the Eagle lead to 4-0

- Abbey Nixon's two-out RBI single drove home Adda Prescott to score Catawba's first run of game two

- Monroe's infield single cut C-N's lead to two runs

- Flynn's opposite-field single scored two more to tie the game at 4

THIRD INNING 

- Abbi Martin's two-run single started the scoring again for Carson-Newman in the third

- Back-to-back base hits drove in runs for the Eagles, making it 9-4

- A fielding error and a single made it 11-4 before C-N added another score on another RBI single to make it a 12-4 lead

FOURTH INNING

- Wilkins and Monroe hit back-to-back doubles to pull within seven runs of the lead

FIFTH INNING

- A two-out infield single put Carson-Newman ahead 13-5

- They would score two more runs on RBI base hits to reach 15 runs in game two
