Softball picks up split at Tusculum

Greeneville, Tenn. — The Catawba College softball team bounced back with a win in game two of its doubleheader at Tusculum on Friday, taking a split with the Pioneers in South Atlantic Conference play.

GAME ONE | Tusculum 6, Catawba 2

TEAM STATISTICS

- Tusculum out-hit Catawba 11-4

- The Pioneers had four of seven extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error

- Catawba left three runners on base; TU stranded five

- The Tusculum starter allowed two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out three; the Catawba Indian staff allowed six runs on 11 hits and one walk, striking out two

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Macie Crutchfield threw a scoreless inning

- Grace Flynn was 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored

- Brianna Gallagher doubled and drove in a run

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn doubled to lead off the game

- Gallagher's double drove her home for the afternoon's first run

SECOND INNING

- Flynn's second double in as many innings scored Abbey Nixon to take a 2-0 lead

FOURTH INNING

- Andrea Davis' double started a two-out rally for the Pioneers

-They followed up with a double and a single to tie the game at 2

FIFTH INNING

- A one-out double set up Tusculum to score on an RBI single to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth

SIXTH INNING

- The Pioneers added to their lead with a two-RBI single and an RBI double, leading 6-2

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Tusculum 12-7

- The Pioneers had two of three extra-base hits

- TU committed three of four errors in the game

- Tusculum left seven runners on base; the Catawba Indians stranded 10

- Catawba recorded all four stolen bases in the game

- The Pioneers' pitchers allowed six unearned runs on 12 hits and two walks, striking out three; Catawba's staff allowed four earned runs on seven hits and five walks, striking out five

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alexis Monroe was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored

- Flynn added two hits with an RBI and a run scored

- Gallagher also had a pair of hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored

- Lainey Ruscoe came off the bench with two hits and an RBI

- Dakotah Wilkins picked up her fourth win in five outings, tossing four frames; Alex Baquie picked up the save, making the final three outs

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Tusculum advanced to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch to score the game's first run

SECOND INNING

- Wilkins reached on an error, stole second and scored on Emily Coffey's RBI single to center field to tie the game at 1

THIRD INNING

 - Tusculum regained the lead after they cashed in a leadoff triple with an RBI groundout

FOURTH INNING

- Micaela Hartman led off the fourth with an infield single; Wilkins once again reached on an error and Coffey's bunt moved them over into scoring position

- Bella Boykin's sac fly to left field tied the game once again at 2

- Flynn broke the tie with an RBI base hit up the middle

- Monroe drove in Flynn on a base hit through the left side

- Gallagher's double to right and Ruscoe's RBI single up the middle both brought in insurance scores to give Catawba a 6-2 advantage

FIFTH INNING

- A walk loaded the bases for Tusculum and they scored on another walk

- Gallagher came home on a groundball to shortstop to get the second out and threw out the final out at first base on the next batter to leave the bases loaded

SEVENTH INNING

- Two singles brought the tying run to the plate with nobody out for Tusculum in the bottom of the seventh

- An infield pop-up and an RBI groundout got Catawba within an out away

- The Pioneers hit an infield single to score their fifth run and bring the winning run to teh plate

- Baquie forced a groundout for Catawba's eighth win in SAC play

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to Whitley Field next week, hosting Carson-Newman
