HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team surrendered the South Atlantic Conference opener on Saturday with an 11-7 result at Lincoln Memorial, marking its smallest margin of defeat in the series since the 2022 meeting.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba (3-2, 0-1 SAC) kept the shot count a competitive one as Lincoln Memorial (5-3, 1-0 SAC) held a 25-20 advantage
- The Catawba Indians led the contest in shots on goal by an 11-8 difference
- Turnovers plagued both squads but Catawba had one fewer miscue in a 22-21 final tally
- Despite LMU's 8-for-8 third quarter, the hosts were less efficient on the clear as Catawba won the battle .813-.739
- Ground balls favored the blue and white 18-16, but the Railsplitters were better on the draw by two at 11-9
- In net, Ashlea Nieland turned in a five-save sheet for the Catawba Indians while LMU's Jovie Favati went 9-for-16 (.563) to claim the win
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Erynne McNulty and Mary Sorvillo headlined the Catawba attack with two goals apiece, plus an assist for McNulty to make it a three-point effort for the rookie
- Skylar Mullin netted a goal with an assist as Madison Widecki and Abby Shuren rounded out the scorers with one dart each
- Layne Macknik led the way in draw controls with four, followed by Sorvillo and Maddie Fox who tallied three and two, respectively
- Allison Filosa had a career day defensively, corralling five ground balls with a whopping four caused turnovers
- Fellow sophomore Hannah Abel racked up three caused turnovers to also set a new career high

Next for Catawba is its first-ever meeting with the Dominican Penguins on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at Shuford Stadium. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
