SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-2 result to Golden State program Dominican at Shuford Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
TEAM STATS
- The Catawba Indians (3-3) gave up a 27-10 difference in shots, but Catawba had a better second half with a 7-6 edge over Dominican (6-1)
- The Penguins fired with high accuracy, putting 22 attempts on net while the hosts settled for a .500 clip with five shots on goal
- Dominican narrowly won the turnover and ground ball battles, taking both by three with margins of 18-15 and 15-12, respectively
- On the draw, the Penguins cruised to a 13-4 record; Catawba won the differential in the second half 4-1, but went 0-12 in the opening 30 minutes
- Catawba was shown one fewer card (5-4) as Dominican was issued the game's two yellows, but the hosts failed to convert in their seven minutes on the power play
- Ashlea Nieland nabbed six saves and took the decision before Ava Kunza made her season debut with two stops across the final 30 minutes; the Penguins' Natalie Oyler and Katherine Chavez split their time in net equally, but Oyler got the win and Chavez made all three saves
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Layne Macknik scored on the Catawba Indians' second free-position attempt and her only shot of the game, tying the Penguins at 1-all in the 10th minute
- Ava Stanza found paydirt late, also scoring via free position, with a team-high two caused turnovers
- Hannah Abel and Allison Filosa each tallied a team-best two ground balls while adding one takeaway apiece
- Audrey Adelsberger and Abby Shuren were each credited with one caused turnover and a ground ball pickup
- Mary Sorvillo pocketed three draw controls as Maddie Fox snatched up one
