SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team was defeated by South Atlantic Conference opponent UVA Wise, 18-12, on Saturday in the program's annual Morgan's Message Game at Shuford Stadium.
TEAM STATS
- The Catawba Indians (3-6, 0-3 SAC) surrendered a 33-24 margin in shots, but took over the fourth quarter with a 10-6 edge over UVA Wise (10-1, 4-0 SAC); the shots on goal count closely reflected the total at 26-19
- UVA Wise took slightly better care of the ball with 20 turnovers committed while the Highland Cavaliers forced Catawba to commit 22
- Each side registered 16 successful clears although the Highland Cavaliers ended with a fractionally superior efficiency rate with 20 attempts against the hosts' 21
- The blue and white won the ground ball battle 19-16, but the Cavs held a 19-13 advantage on the draw
- Catawba amassed eight saves split between starter Ava Kunza's six in 41 minutes and Ashlea Nieland's three in 19 minutes of relief; for the Cavs, Addie Donalson and Katie Michaels played one half apiece to combine for seven stops in the crease
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Abby Shuren erupted for five goals, tying her career high, with two assists to lead the offense on a seven-point day while collecting two ground balls
- Ava Stanza recorded her second career hat trick – the first as a Catawba Indian – with three goals on as many shots
- Madison Widecki found the twine twice with three ground balls and a caused turnover, while Skylar Mullin and Mary Sorvillo netted one goal apiece
- Emily Better had a busy day in the midfield, dishing out two assists with two caused turnovers and two ground ball pickups
- Allison Filosa forced two turnovers and scooped up a team-high four ground balls, adding her third career assist offensively
- Audrey Adelsberger corralled her 100th career ground ball in the contest's fifth minute, finishing with three pickups as well as two caused turnovers
- Maddie Fox tied her career-best draw controls total set on Feb. 28 against Shorter, nabbing possession seven times ahead of Mullin's four and Sorvillo's two
