SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College women's lacrosse team put together a phenomenal showing on the draw, but 23rd-ranked Anderson pushed through the deficit in a 13-3 result favoring the visitors at Shuford Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
TEAM STATS
- The Catawba Indians (3-7, 0-4 SAC) were limited to five shots – four on goal – while Anderson (7-5, 4-1 SAC) fired 31 including 21 on-target attempts
- Turnovers played a major role in the contest as Catawba forced the Trojans to commit 18 miscues, but the blue and white coughed up the rock a season-high 34 times
- Catawba enjoyed a solid day in transition with a .750 clearing percentage (15-for-20), a notch lower than Anderson's .828 (24-for-29)
- Anderson led the ground ball count 23-17 at triple zeros, but the Catawba Indians kept the gap closer in the second half which held a 10-10 difference
- The blue and white imposed their will at midfield with a 12-6 advantage in draw controls including a first-half margin of 7-1
- Ashlea Nieland went the distance for Catawba and tallied eight saves; Rory Turner made one save in 45 minutes to secure the win for AU before giving way to Amelia King who faced no shots in the final quarter
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Ava Stanza found the back of the net twice with Mary Sorvillo netting one goal on her only shot attempt for the Catawba attacking unit
- Assists were credited to Sorvillo and Madison Widecki, marking the latter's third career helper
- Maddie Fox scooped up a career high five ground balls with one draw control
- Skylar Mullin pestered the Trojans for three caused turnovers and also secured a draw control
- Hannah Abel joined Mullin as the Catawba Indians with multiple caused turnovers, adding two with three ground balls
- Sorvillo keyed the hosts' prowess on the draw with a team-high six controls, followed by Layne Macknik and Allison Filosa with two apiece
