Softball adds two more run-rule wins as bats stay hot

Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College softball team picked up two more run-rule wins at Whitley Field on Friday against Davis & Elkins and Molloy to push its scoring total up to 42 runs in just 22 innings in four home games this week.

GAME ONE | Catawba 10, Davis & Elkins 2 (5 innings)

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Davis & Elkins 12-3

- The Catawba Indians hit the lone homer and six of seven extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error in the game

- Catawba recorded the lone stolen base in the contest

- The Catawba Indians' starter allowed two runs on three hits and one walk, striking out six; Davis & Elkins' staff allowed nine earned runs on 12 hits and three walks, striking out two

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Grace Flynn was 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and three runs scored

- Bella Boykin doubled, drove in two and scored twice

- Dakotah Wilkins was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored

- Brianna Gallagher doubled twice

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn doubled to lead off the game; later, Maddy Altiers' RBI single scored her to open up the scoring

- Wilkins' two-out single down the line scored two to push Catawba's lead to 3-0

SECOND INNING

- Abbey Nixon drove home a run on a double in the second to extend the lead

FOURTH INNING

- A two-out double got D&E on the board in the fourth, cutting the lead in half

- Flynn answered with a solo blast to center field

FIFTH INNING

- A bunt single loaded the bases in the fifth

- Emily Coffey's sac fly brought in a run to bring Catawba's lead back to four

- Boykin's two-RBI double extended the Catawba Indian advantage to 8-2

- Nixon's RBI groundout set up Gallagher's RBI double the enacted the mercy rule

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Molloy took an early lead on a two-out, two-RBI single

- Flynn led off the bottom half and Gallagher traded places with a double of her own

- A two-out error scored the tying run

SECOND INNING

- Flynn's sacrifice fly in the second gave Catawba a 3-2 lead

FOURTH INNING

- Micaela Hartman's solo homer in the fourth gave Catawba an insurance score, up 4-2

FIFTH INNING

- Flynn doubled again to lead off the fifth; Nixon's RBI single scored her

- McCorkle's two-run shot to left field made it 7-2 Catawba

SIXTH INNING

- Lainey Ruscoe hit a one-out homer in the sixth

- Flynn followed with a solo blast of her own right behind her

- A bases-loaded walk enacted the mercy rule for identical 10-2 scores

UP NEXT

- Catawba faces Davis & Elkins again on Saturday for a doubleheader; first pitch of game one is set for noon
