Softball completes six-game weekend sweep with wins over D&E

Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College softball team finished off an impressive six-game homestand over the weekend in which it out-scored its opponents 65-19 with a doubleheader sweep of Davis & Elkins on Saturday at Whitley Field.

GAME ONE | Catawba 8, Davis & Elkins 4

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Davis & Elkins 11-9

- The Catawba Indians hit both homers in the game and four of eight extra-base hits

- The Senators committed both errors in the contest

- Catawba recorded three of four stolen bases in the game

- The Catawba Indian pitchers allowed four runs on nine hits and seven walks, striking out two; Davis & Elkins' staff allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and six walks, striking out eight

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Lainey Ruscoe earned her first win in the circle for Catawba, throwing 3.1 innings

- Dakotah Wilkins provided a scoreless frame in relief

- Jordan McCorkle homered and doubled with two RBI and a run scored

- Maddy Altiers homered and scored twice

- Bella Boykin drove two in on a base hit, scored a run and stole two bases

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn singled and advanced to third on a bunt

- Brianna Gallagher's RBI safety squeeze brought home the game's first run

- A two-out error allowed Altiers to reach base and McCorkle scored her on an RBI double to make it 2-0

SECOND INNING

- Wilkins walked and, like Flynn in the first, advanced to third on a bunt

- Boykin's bunt singled scored her to make it 3-0 Catawba

- Abbey Nixon's two-out RBI single put the Catawba Indians ahead 4-0

THIRD INNING

- Altiers hit a leadoff homer in the third before McCorkle followed it up with another of her own to make it 6-0 Catawba

- Three singles loaded the bases with still nobody out in the third

- Boykin drew a bases-loaded walk to drive home another run

- Flynn's sac fly had Catawba leading 8-0

FOURTH INNING

- Two singles followed by a double got D&E's first run on the board

- Another RBI single pulled the Senators to an 8-2 deficit

- D&E got caught in a rundown but scored before making the third out, trailing 8-3

FIFTH INNING

- Another RBI double from D&E scored their fourth unanswered run of the ballgame, but it would also be their last

GAME TWO | Catawba 15, Davis & Elkins 5

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Davis & Elkins 18-6

- The Senators hit three of five homers in the game, but the Catawba Indians had nine of 13 extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error in the game

- Catawba had all three stolen bases in game two

- The Catawba Indian pitchers allowed five runs on six hits and a walk, striking out four; D&E's staff allowed 13 earned runs on 18 hits and two walks, striking out four

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Gallagher was 3-for-5 with a homer, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored

- Flynn added another homer among three hits with two RBI and three runs scored

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn reached on an error and stole second to lead off game two

- Nixon's RBI double scored the opening run of the game

- McCorkle later followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Catawba

THIRD INNING

- A two-out, two-run homer tied the game at two in the top of the third

- Gallagher's double set up runners on second and third with nobody out

- McCorkle's safety squeeze scored the runner to regain the lead

- Alexis Monroe dropped down another one to make it 4-2

- Molly Strider sent a double the other way to bring another run home

- RBI singles from Rachel Pressley and Boykin blew the game open with Catawba on top, 7-2

FOURTH INNING

- A solo homer from D&E made it 7-3

- McCorkle and Monroe doubles with two outs sent Catawba's lead back to five

FIFTH INNING

- The Senators' third homer of the game was a two-run blast that brought D&E to within three

- Flynn's solo homer started a two-out rally for Catawba in the fifth

- Gallagher's RBI double scored Nixon to go up 10-5

- McCorkle stayed red-hot with an RBI double to push the lead to 11-5

SIXTH INNING

- Flynn drove home Boykin to make it 12-5

- Gallagher's three-run homer met the mercy-rule limit – Catawba's fifth of the week

UP NEXT

- Catawba faces a test on Wednesday, when it travels to 10th-ranked Francis Marion; first pitch of game one is set for 3 p.m.
