Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team fell in its third straight home game at Goodman Arena to close the homestand, falling 74-64 to Lenoir-Rhyne, who picked up their 10th consecutive win on the night, in South Atlantic Conference play.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Lenoir-Rhyne shot 20-for-56 (36 percent), while Catawba was 19-of-64 (30 percent) from the field
- The Bears were 8-for-26 (31 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 3-of-18 (17 percent) from long range
- Catawba was 23-for-26 (89 percent) at the free throw line, while LR was 26-of-36 (72 percent) at the charity stripe
- Lenoir-Rhyne held a slight 45-41 edge in rebounding; Catawba's 13 offensive rebounds turned into 10 second-chance points
- The Bears recorded 14 assists to 17 turnovers, while the Catawba Indians had 10 assists to 15 turnovers, but it was LR who led 27-7 in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (24-22) and bench points (27-15)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Mary Spry scored her third straight 20-plus point game with 23 points on 7-for-13 shooting and 9-of-10 at the foul line with six rebounds and three steals
- Sheree Gidney added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting
- Julie Janus chipped in 10 points off the bench including 7-of-8 at the free throw line with six boards
- Kairah Dixon-Booker grabbed a team-high eight rebounds
- Saniya Wilson dished out four assists
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Lenoir-Rhyne opened up the contest with the game's first five points
- Free throws allowed Catawba to claw back in the earlygoing, down 7-6 near the six-minute mark
- The Bears responded with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 14-6 over the next minute
- A Brooklin Ingram three-pointer got the Catawba Indians back within four points; LR led 21-16 after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- The Bears scored the first five points of the second quarter to open their lead up to 10 points
- Spry's free throws got Catawba back to within six points
- After the Bears built the lead back to 10, Spry was fouled on a three-pointer with a second to go to bring the Catawba Indians to a 34-27 deficit at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba's deficit shrunk to as little as three points following Spry's jumper at the 6:46 mark
- The Bears responded with a 7-2 run to return the margin to 44-36
- LR led 53-45 with 10 minutes remaining
FOURTH QUARTER
- Madilyn Winterton's jumper pushed LR's lead to 12 points early in the fourth
- Back-to-back Catawba buckets got the hosts back within eight with 6:39 to play, but the Bears scored seven straight to grow the lead to 15
- The teams traded free throws for much of the remainder as Lenoir-Rhyne earned the SAC win
