Men’s Basketball upsets #21 Lenoir-Rhyne, 87-78

SALISBURY, N.C. — The Catawba College men's basketball team put a five-game losing streak against Lenoir-Rhyne in the dirt on Wednesday night, capturing an 87-78 victory over the 21st-ranked Bears at Goodman Arena.

TEAM STATS
- The Catawba Indians (15-4, 10-3 SAC) managed a 38.9% field goal percentage despite going a meager 3-for-23 (13.0%) on two-point shots in the second half; Lenoir-Rhyne (16-5, 10-3 SAC) had a narrow edge in shooting with a 40.7% clip
- Catawba made its living beyond the arc, hitting 11 three-pointers — the most since Nov. 21 — on a 45.8% success rate while holding the Bears to a rough 3-for-16 (18.8%)
- Thanks to a combined 53 fouls, 72 free throws were attempted in the contest; LR wound up being more efficient at the charity stripe by a 75.6%-64.5% margin
- The blue and white led the rebounding battle 47-43, collecting 22 offensive boards to create a 17-12 advantage in extra-chance scoring
- The Catawba Indians capitalized on LR's 17 turnovers by boasting a 20-9 margin in points off takeaways; offensively, the hosts took care of the rock with 10 turnovers committed, marking their fourth consecutive game with 10 or fewer

INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Carson Daniel went 4-for-6 from deep and 6-for-6 on free throws en route to a career-high 24 points, chipping in a team-best seven assists and six boards to sweeten the night
- Jordan Simpson also turned in a 24-point affair, drilling five three-pointers while stripping the Bears three times
- Ibra Athie corralled eight offensive rebounds — totaling 14 — with 14 points for a high-volume double-double; the redshirt senior also set a new career high of five assists
- Zion McDuffie had an effective 14-minute stint with nine points, six boards, three steals and a block
- Justin Banks swatted four shots, his most in a game this semester, with six points, a pair of rebounds and a takeaway
- Chase Daniel played a supporting role in the offensive attack, dishing out six assists that led to 14 points while generating five of his own
