Anderson, S.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team held a lead heading into the fourth quarter on the road versus Anderson on Wednesday, but the Trojans out-scored the Catawba Indians 25-13 in the period to pull away with the win in South Atlantic Conference action.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 24-for-70 (34 percent) from the field, while Anderson went 21-of-66 (32 percent) from the floor
- The Trojans shot 3-for-15 (20 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians were 4-for-24 (17 percent) from deep
- AU was 22-for-26 (85 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba was 5-for-10 (50 percent) at the charity stripe
- Anderson held a slight edge in rebounding 50-46; Catawba's 11 offensive rebounds helped them to a 7-4 lead in second-chance points
- The Trojans recorded 10 assists to 12 turnovers, while Catawba had eight assists to 16 turnovers; Catawba held a slight advantage in points off turnovers, 12-10
- Both teams had 34 points in the paint; Catawba led in bench points, 21-17, and Anderson led in fastbreak points 16-10
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Sheree Gidney came off the bench for a game-high 17 points off 7-for-13 shooting with five rebounds
- Brooklin Ingram added 13 points with seven boards
- Makayla Stokes chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds
- Saniya Wilson scored eight points with a team-high four assists
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Anderson scored the game's first five points in the opening 90 seconds
- Ingram and Gidney combined on a 9-0 Catawba run to flip the lead to the Catawba Indians at the 2:45 mark
- The teams ended the first quarter tied at 15
SECOND QUARTER
- Stokes' three-pointer capped a 5-0 run to start the second quarter for Catawba
- Anderson scored eight of 11 points in a minute and a half to tie the game at 29 near the midway point
- The Trojans scored the half's final five points to enter the halftime locker room leading 34-31
THIRD QUARTER
- After trailing by six near the midway point of the third, Catawba went on a 12-2 run to flip the advantage back in their favor, 44-40
- A pair of free throws by Anderson pulled the margin heading into the final quarter at 44-42
FOURTH QUARTER
- Two free throws and a layup allowed the Trojans to take the lead early in the fourth
- Wilson and Gidney combined on scores to turn the lead back to Catawba at the 5:35 mark
- Anderson regained the lead with 4:28 left before Stokes' layup made it a 50-all game with just over four minutes to play
- Six free throws kickstarted a 9-0 Anderson run as they pulled ahead in the final minutes
- The Trojans kept their distance by going 15-for-16 at the foul line in the game's final five minutes to earn the home victory
