Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College women's basketball team dropped its 2025-26 home opener on Wednesday evening at Goodman Arena to Shorter University in non-conference action.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Shorter shot 19-for-47 (40 percent) from the field, while Catawba was 21-of-71 (30 percent) from the floor
- The Hawks went 6-for-16 (38 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 5-for-26 (19 percent) from long range
- SU was 18-for-25 (72 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba was just 7-for-13 (54 percent) at the charity stripe
- Shorter held a slight 41-40 edge in rebounding – the Catawba Indians held an 18-10 edge in second-chance points
- Catawba recorded nine assists to 16 turnovers, while the Hawks had six assists to 26 turnovers – both teams scored 23 points off turnovers
- The Catawba Indians led in points in the paint 28-14, but Shorter led in fast-break points (12-11) and bench points (15-10)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Bailee Goodlett scored a team-high 19 points with two three-pointers
- Mary Spry added 12 points and seven rebounds on 6-for-12 shooting with three steals
- Brooklin Ingram added 11 points on four made baskets
- Julie Janus grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Spry's layup gave Catawba a 7-2 lead early on in the first
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Shorter gave the Hawks the lead near the midway point
- The Hawks led 14-12 after one quarter
SECOND QUARTER
- Shorter's lead grew to six at the 5:54 mark
- Spry bookended an 8-0 run to give Catawba the lead, 29-27
- A late-second jumper gave Shorter the lead again at the halftime break, 32-31
THIRD QUARTER
- The teams traded baskets in the third until Shorter returned its lead to five with under a minute to go
- The Hawks maintained their five-point lead into the final 10 minutes of play, 45-40
FOURTH QUARTER
- Spry's jumper got the Catawba deficit down to a single point with 2:46 to go
- The Hawks responded with a 6-0 run over the next 90 seconds to build a cushion
- Goodlett's and-one got it back down to four with just less than a minute left, but it's the last time Catawba would score
