Women’s Basketball claws out SAC win over previously unbeaten LMU

Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College Women's Basketball team held off a fourth-quarter comeback to knock off previously unbeaten Lincoln Memorial at Goodman Arena on Saturday in South Atlantic Conference play.

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba shot 17-for-54 (32 percent) from the field, while holding Lincoln Memorial to 18-of-58 (31 percent) from the floor

- The Catawba Indians were 4-for-14 (29 percent) from three-point range; the Railsplitters were 6-for-28 (21 percent) from deep

- Catawba shot 16-for-17 (94 percent) from the free throw line, while LMU was 9-for-20 (45 percent) from the charity stripe

- Lincoln Memorial held a slight 42-40 edge in rebounding

- The Railsplitters recorded 10 assists to 14 turnovers, while Catawba had nine assists to 16 turnovers; Catawba held a 17-12 edge in points off turnovers

- LMU led 20-14 in points in the paint, but Catawba led in fastbreak points (9-2) and bench points (23-3)

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Mary Spry scored a team-high 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting with eight rebounds

- Imani Williams logged 32 minutes off the bench, scoring 11 points 

- Brooklin Ingram was the third Catawba Indian in double figures with 10 points 

- Kairah Dixon-Booker was just shy of a double-double with nine points and 13 boards

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST QUARTER

- LMU went up four points early on in the first quarter following a three-pointer

- Julie Janus' three-pointer at the 3:35 mark tied the game at 9

- The teams were tied at 13 after 10 minutes

SECOND QUARTER

- Three-pointers from Williams and Ingram catapulted Catawba to a six-point advantage early in the second

- Spry's jumper pushed the Catawba Indian advantage to 30-20 with under four minutes to play in the half

- An LMU jumper just before the halftime buzzer cut the Railsplitters' deficit to 34-26 at the break

THIRD QUARTER

- Catawba's lead grew to as much as 15 points late in the third quarter, holding the Railsplitters to just seven points during the period

- Catawba led 46-33 with 10 minutes to play

FOURTH QUARTER

- A quick 6-0 run from Lincoln Memorial cut Catawba's lead to seven points at the 7:26 mark

- Alexa Smiddy's layup with 30 seconds remaining pulled LMU to 52-50

- Catawba turned the ball over on their next possession and the Railsplitters were fouled with eight seconds left

- LMU missed the front end, but connected on the second to cut the deficit to a single point

- Saniya Wilson drained a pair of free throws on the next trip down and LMU's try for a tie was no good

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to action next Wednesday, traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne to continue SAC play for a 5:30 p.m. tip
