Greeneville, Tenn. —- The Catawba College Women's Basketball team forced Tusculum to 19 turnovers and under 40 percent shooting from the field in a gritty 64-56 road win in South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday evening.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Tusculum was 20-for-51 (39 percent) from the floor, while Catawba shot 21-of-59 (36 percent) from the floor
- The Catawba Indians were 6-for-19 (32 percent) from three-point range while holding the Pioneers to 8-of-26 (31 percent) from deep
- Catawba was an efficient 16-for-18 (89 percent) from the free throw line; TU was 8-for-15 (53 percent) at the foul line
- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded Tusculum 40-32; their 16 offensive rebounds led to a 12-5 edge in second-chance points
- Catawba recorded 11 assists to 15 turnovers, while the Pioneers had 11 assists to 19 turnovers; TU held a slim 20-19 advantage in points off turnovers
- The Pioneers led in fastbreak points (16-12); Catawba held advantages in points in the paint (30-18) and bench points (12-11)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Mary Spry scored a team-high 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting with nine rebounds
- Brooklin Ingram added 13 points behind three three-pointers
- Imani Williams logged 12 points with four assists
- Julie Janus grabbed 10 rebounds and three steals
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Two Ingram three-pointers had Catawba sprinting out of the gates, leading 6-0 in the opening three minutes
- Tusculum responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead near the midway point of the period
- Triples from Kaelyn Allen and Spry capped an 8-0 run that shifted the lead back to Catawba
- Spry's free throws at the end of the period helped Catawba take a 16-13 lead after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Five early points from Spry in the second helped push the Catawba lead to eight
- The Catawba Indians led by the same margin at the halftime break, 33-25
THIRD QUARTER
- Makayla Stokes and Spry combined on a 7-0 run to start the second half, extending the lead to 15 points
- Back-to-back three-pointers from Tusculum got the deficit back within single digits
- After Catawba returned the lead to 13 points, a TU three-pointer cut the difference to 44-36
- Catawba led 46-38 heading into the final period
FOURTH QUARTER
- Tusculum scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, getting within four points
- A 7-0 Pioneer run later in the fourth quarter cut Catawba's advantage to 50-49 at the 4:32 mark
- Kairah Dixon-Booker immediately responded with an and-one layup and Ingram knocked down a key three-pointer to return the lead to seven points at the 1:19 mark
- Catawba took advantage of its trips to the free throw line, reaching a 10-point margin once again late in the fourth
