Salisbury, N.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team hosted 8th-ranked Coker at Goodman Arena, falling to the reigning Southeast Regional champions, 71-55 despite senior center Mary Spry's 18 points.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Coker shot 23-for-55 (42 percent) from the field, while Catawba went 19-of-58 (33 percent) from the floor
- The Cobras were 7-for-15 (47 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians shot 3-of-16 (19 percent) from long range
- Coker was 18-for-24 (75 percent) from the free throw line, while Catawba shot 14-for-21 (67 percent) at the foul line
- Catawba out-rebounded Coker 40-34; they were able to turn 15 offensive rebounds into eight second-chance points
- The Cobras recorded 14 assists to 13 turnovers, while Catawba had five assists to 15 turnovers; Coker held a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (26-20) and bench points (29-16), while Coker led in fastbreak points (16-8)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Spry scored 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field with a team-high eight rebounds
- Sheree Gidney chipped in 17 points
- Imani Williams logged a team-best three assists
- Brooklin Ingram and Saniya Wilson added a three-pointer apiece
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Coker jumped out to an early 9-5 lead following Shawnteanna Tillman's three-pointer
- The Cobras' lead grew to nine points at the 4-minute mark of the opening quarter
- Coker led 21-12 after the opening 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- A quick 6-0 run closed by two buckets from Spry helped Catawba chip the deficit down to three points early in the second
- The Cobras responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 29-19
- Coker led 35-24 at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Kristynn Knight's three-pointer grew the Coker lead to 43-27 at the 5:22 mark of the third quarter
- The Cobras' lead got to as high as 19 points before the Catawba Indians scored seven of the final 10 points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 51-36 with 10 minutes to go
FOURTH QUARTER
- Gidney and Spry combined on a Catawba 6-0 run to get Coker's lead back within single digits with less than two minutes to go
- The lead got to as little as eight points with less than a minute to go, but Coker scored the game's final eight points at the free throw line to skew the final margin
