Salisbury, N.C. —- The seventh-ranked and second-seeded Catawba College baseball team fell in Game 2 of the Southeast Super Regional at Newman Park on Friday, as 18th-ranked and fifth-seed Francis Marion forced the winner-take-all Game 3 on Saturday.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba out-hit Francis Marion 10-9
- The Catawba Indians recorded three of five home runs; the Patriots had six of 10 extra-base hits
- FMU committed three of four errors
- Francis Marion left seven runners on base, while Catawba stranded 14 runners
- The Catawba Indians recorded four of five stolen bases
- Francis Marion's staff allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and 10 walks and seven strikeouts; Catawba's staff allowed eight runs on nine hits and seven walks, striking out six
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Parker Lakey threw 3.2 innings, allowing just one run with three strikeouts
- Jake Dunlap was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI
- Brandon Crabtree added two hits, including his team-leading 18th home run
- Malachi Cloud also homered and walked twice
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST INNING
- Crabtree launched a solo homer in the top of the first
- Following a double and a walk, Ethan McAnally matched with a three-run homer to left for Francis Marion to take a 3-1 lead
SECOND INNING
- Charlie Bussey III added to the Patriots' lead with a solo homer in the second
THIRD INNING
- After Hunter Atkins' one-out walked, Dunlap lifted his first collegiate home run over the right field wall to cut FMU's lead to 4-3
FOURTH INNING
- Cloud tied the game with a leadoff homer in the fourth
FIFTH INNING
- Nathan Chrismon walked with two outs, leading to Ty Hubbard's double; Chrismon scored on a misplayed ball in the outfield to take a 5-4 lead
- FMU's Will Dorell and Myles Proffit recorded doubles in the bottom half to tie the game at 5
SIXTH INNING
- With runners on first and second, Francis Marion attempted a double steal; McAnally was cut down at second, but Bussey took two bases and scored the go-ahead run, leading 6-5
EIGHTH INNING
- Two hit-by-pitches and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth for FMU
- A wild pitch scored an insurance run for the Patriots
- Riley Orr scored another on a sacrifice fly
UP NEXT
- Catawba and Francis Marion will play one final time at Newman Park with the winner to advance to the Division II National Championships
- Game 3 is currently scheduled for noon on Saturday
