Softball celebrates seniors prior to split with UVA Wise

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team celebrated eight seniors on its Senior Day prior to a split with UVA Wise in South Atlantic Conference play at Whitley Field on Saturday.

GAME ONE | Catawba 3, UVA Wise 2

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit UVA Wise 7-4

- The Cavaliers hit the lone homer with the Catawba Indians recording two of three extra-base hits

- Both teams committed an error

- Both teams left five runners on base

- Catawba's starter allowed two runs on four hits and one walk, striking out three; Wise's starter allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out seven

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Alex Baquie went the distance, allowing two runs on just four hits with three strikeouts

- Grace Flynn was 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases and two runs scored

- Alexis Monroe singled, drove in a run and scored

- Micaela Hartman doubled and walked

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Flynn singled, stole second and advanced to third on an error

- Monroe's bunt singled scored the game's first run

SECOND INNING

- Mataya Ausmus' two-out, RBI single down the left field line tied the game at 1 in the second

THIRD INNING

- Flynn doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double steal

- Monroe reached third and scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-1 lead

FIFTH INNING

- Ausmus picked up another RBI with a solo homer to lead off the fifth, cutting Catawba's lead to 3-2

GAME TWO | UVA Wise 9, Catawba 7 - 9 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Both teams recorded 12 hits

- UVA Wise recorded the lone homer and three of five extra-base hits

- The Cavaliers committed two of three errors

- Both teams left eight runners on base

- Catawba recorded three of four stolen bases

- UVA Wise's starter allowed six earned runs on 12 hits, striking out one; the Catawba Indian staff allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits and two walks, striking out five

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Monroe was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored

- Flynn tripled and scored three times

- Brianna Gallagher doubled, drove in a run and scored

- Maddy Altiers and Hartman both picked up two hits and drove in a run

HOW IT HAPPENED

THIRD INNING

- Lindsey Polan's three-run homer gave the Cavs an early lead in game two

- Flynn picked up a two-out triple in the bottom half and scored on a wild pitch

FOURTH INNING

- Gallagher doubled on a sharply hit groundball up the middle, tagged up to third on a flyout and scored on Adda Prescott's RBI groundout

SEVENTH INNING

- Two runs scored on fielding error as the Cavs took a 5-2 lead

- Kennedy Miller's two-out single pushed Wise's advantage to 6-2

- Bella Boykin and Dakotah Wilkins led off the bottom half with two singles

- Monroe's two-run single up the middle cut the deficit to 6-4

- Altiers sent a two-out single to center field to score Monroe to make it 6-5

- Emily Coffey reached third on Prescott's single through the right side

- Down to the last out, Hartman tied the game with a single to left center

NINTH INNING

- Taylor Clay's two-run double broke the tie for UVA Wise in the top of the ninth

- The Cavaliers added an insurance score with Kaylynn Baker's RBI single to make it 9-6

- Flynn stole third in the bottom half and scored on an RBI groundout

UP NEXT

- Catawba wraps up regular season action at Whitley Field on Sunday, hosting Barton in non-conference action at 2 and 4 p.m.
