Softball picks up first win of season at USC Aiken

Aiken, S.C. — The Catawba College softball team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday in a doubleheader split with USC Aiken, highlighted by Maddy Altiers' go-ahead RBI double in game two.

GAME ONE | USC Aiken 7, Catawba 2

TEAM STATISTICS

- USC Aiken out-hit Catawba 8-4

- The Pacers had all three extra-base hits

- Both teams committed two errors

- USCA had both stolen bases in game one

- Aiken's starter threw seven innings with two unearned runs on four hits, striking out 12; Catawba's staff allowed seven runs on eight hits and four walks, striking out two

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Altiers was 2-for-3 with an RBI

- Bella Boykin singled and scored in a pinch-hit opportunity

- Emily Coffey drove in a run; Kenzie Church scored

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Two walks, a bunt single and a throwing error allowed Aiken's first run to score in the second

- A two-RBI double made it 3-0 USCA

- The Pacers stole home to lead 4-0 after two frames

THIRD INNING

- A two-out RBI double extended Aiken's lead to 5-0

SIXTH INNING

- Altiers dropped a two-out RBI single to right field to score Church

- The Pacers responded with a two-run single in the bottom half to lead 7-1

SEVENTH INNING

- Boykin recorded an infield single to lead off the seventh

- Coffey's RBI groundout scored her later in the inning

TEAM STATISTICS

- USC Aiken out-hit Catawba 11-9

- The Pacers recorded the lone homer and four of seven extra-base hits

- USCA committed three of four errors in the game

- The Catawba Indians recorded all eight stolen bases in game two

- Aiken's pitchers allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks, striking out seven; Catawba's staff allowed five runs on 11 hits and one walk, striking out five

- Brianna Gallagher was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored

- Altiers hit the go-ahead double in the sixth, driving in two runs total across two hits

- Micaela Hartman doubled and scored; Grace Flynn singled and scored two

- Dakotah Wilkins got her first collegiate win in 1.2 innings of relief

- Kate Holland stepped up for the save with a scoreless seventh

- A two-out, two-run homer had the Pacers up in the first inning

SECOND INNING

- Flynn hit a two-out, two-run single to tie the game in the second

THIRD INNING

- A bunt single and an RBI double allowed Aiken to regain the lead

FIFTH INNING

- Nixon singled and stole second to lead off the fifth

- Altiers scored her on an RBI single to tie the game

- A double steal gave Catawba its first lead of the afternoon

- A two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom half put the Pacers back in front in the bottom half

SIXTH INNING

- Hartman doubled to lead off the sixth

- An error moved a runner forward, allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch

- Altiers hit a two-run double to left to score the go-ahead run
