Men's Lacrosse opens season with rout of Mount Olive, 15-4

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — The Catawba College men's lacrosse team warded off the demons of yesteryears, snagging its first-ever victory in Pickle Town with a 15-4 rolling of Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon.

TEAM STATS
- Catawba (1-0) dominated the shot count with a 50-27 lead over the Trojans (0-1), winning the on-goal battle by a whopping 31-12 margin
- Each team had just three failed clears as the Catawba Indians held a 20-17 advantage, logging an .870 clearing percentage
- The blue and white took great care of the ball, committing only three turnovers while forcing Mount Olive to cough up possession 10 times
- A total of three penalties were issued in the matchup, each going against UMO leading to one man-up goal for the guests
- On the faceoff dot, the Trojans possessed a 14-8 edge as Catawba was paced by Cael Petroff's six triumphs
- Ben LoPiccolo gobbled up two-thirds of his shots faced, nabbing eight saves to secure the win; on the Trojan end, Kurtis Lensing went the distance with 16 saves

INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Freshman Statton Rehrer and Queens transfer Micah Stechmiller notched hat tricks in their first games as Catawba Indians, netting three goals apiece with Rehrer also adding a helper
- Tanner Stout, on a team-high nine shots including six on goal, and Jack Mercer each chipped in two scores, marking Mercer's first career multi-goal performance
- Peyton Turner put on a passing clinic, tying his career high of four assists to share the top point-scoring value with Rehrer
- Boston Rehrer tacked on three points using one goal and a pair of dimes, dishing the rock to Statton on his younger brother's first career dart
- Owen Conway led the defense with four ground balls and was one of five players to record one caused turnover
- Petroff and Jack Hart, to set his career-best value, gathered three ground balls apiece

The Catawba Indians are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Belmont Abbey. Opening faceoff against the Crusaders is set for 1 p.m.
