SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College women's lacrosse team picked up its third consecutive win on Wednesday, corralling a 19-10 victory against the Coker Cobras at Shuford Stadium.
TEAM STATS
- Catawba (5-3, 3-1 SAC) led the shot count 37-25 with an 8-3 advantage over Coker (4-7, 0-5 SAC) off free positions
- The hosts won the contest's ground ball (25-18) and turnover (28-23) battles
- Draw controls largely favored the Catawba Indians by a 20-12 difference
- Both sides were penalized six times, but Coker committed significantly more fouls with 14 whistles to Catawba's five
- Catawba collected 15 clears on 24 attempts while holding the Cobras to a 10-for-19 clip
- Ava Kunza spent every minute in net for Catawba, making seven saves; Olivia Schmidt and Harper Davidson shared goalkeeping duties for Coker, combining for 12 stops as Schmidt received the decision
INDIVIDUAL STATS
- Rylie Faircloth had an explosive night with a career-high five points on four goals and an assist
- Abby Shuren also piled on four goals while Mary Sorvillo and Skylar Mullin each scored thrice to give Catawba a quartet of hat tricks
- Joey Baillie racked up six draw controls with three ground balls, chipping in a goal and two assists offensively
- Grace Virginia Deal snared a five ground balls as Mullin and Allison Filosa followed with four apiece
- Mullin came away with a career-best three caused turnovers while fellow rookies Filosa and Hannah Abel each tallied two
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Shuren put the Catawba Indians ahead quickly with her game-opening goal occurring within 37 seconds of the initial whistle
- Leah Corley evened the ledger on a free position opportunity, but Shuren struck again less than a minute later
- The Cobras surged ahead with three straight goals including two from Mia MacMillan, making it a 4-2 lead for Coker
- After over four minutes of silence, Catawba broke open the floodgates with four goals in a three-minute span to close the quarter ahead 6-4
Second Quarter
- The home team wasted little time off the first draw again as it took Sorvillo 34 seconds to lift the lead to three
- Kate Halcro and MacMillan tightened the gap to 7-6 in the still-young second stanza
- Helena Cronemiller, Faircloth and Mullin found paydirt to regain its advantage with one extra goal
- Halcro powered in her third goal of the affair shortly before Faircloth sealed a hat trick of her own, sending the contest to halftime at 11-7
Third Quarter
- Faircloth dished out the Catawba Indians' next tally scored by Mullin following two empty Coker possessions
- Deal and Sorvillo delivered a one-two punch midway through the period, doubling the Cobra scoring output with the 13th and 14th Catawba goals
- Baillie connected with Mullin a couple minutes later to secure her first career hatty
- 13 seconds after a Catawba yellow card, Halcro converted the extra-man chance with help from Kaiya Sabur as the Cobras took a 15-8 deficit to the fourth frame
Fourth Quarter
- Shuren sent in a dart assisted by Baillie to offset the previous Coker goal in under a minute
- Faircloth and Sorvillo converted free position opportunities to reach a running clock at 18-8, allowing the next 7:30 to tick away quickly before Sabur halted it with a Cobra strike
- A failed Catawba clear was parlayed into a Verena Turnwald dart, but Ella McCusker offered a swift response to finalize a 19-10 triumph for the hosts
