Fayetteville, N.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team suffered a 79-63 loss at Fayetteville State on Monday night, closing the team's five-game road trip to begin the season.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Fayetteville State shot 53 percent (30-for-57) from the field, while Catawba was 34 percent (21-of-61) from the field
- The Broncos went 9-for-25 (36 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians were 5-of-18 (28 percent) from deep
- Catawba was 16-for-21 (76 percent) from the free throw line, while FSU was 10-for-15 (67 percent) from the charity stripe
- Fayetteville State won the rebounding battle 40-34; Catawba turned 16 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points
- The Broncos were credited with 27 assists on 30 made field goals; the Catawba Indians had 8 assists to 24 turnovers, but scored 30 points off of 26 FSU turnovers
- FSU led in points in the paint (42-20), fastbreak points (24-11) and bench points (36-21)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Bailee Goodlett recorded a double-double with a game-high 21 points with 10 rebounds along with three assists
- Mary Spry added 14 points and four rebounds
- Saniya Wilson knocked down a pair of three-pointers
- Kairah Dixon-Booker grabbed a team-high six rebounds; Brooklin Ingram tallied a team-best four steals
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Ingram came out of the gates hot with the game's first five points in the opening 25 seconds
- An FSU three-pointer tied the game at 7 a couple minutes later
- The Broncos opened up a lead on the heels of nine unanswered points; the run grew to 18-3 as Fayetteville State led 27-12 with 73 seconds to go in the period
- FSU led 29-16 at the quarter break
SECOND QUARTER
- Seven straight points from Spry helped pull the Catawba Indians within six points early in the second quarter
- The Broncos returned the lead to double digits, ahead by 14 with 3:34 left to go in the opening half
- FSU led 48-36 at the halftime break
THIRD QUARTER
- Catawba scored the first five points of the second half to cut the deficit to seven points after Goodlett's jumper
- A pair of free throws from Goodlett got the margin as low as six points at the 3:55 mark
- Fayetteville State responded with the final eight points of the quarter, leading 64-50 heading into the final period
FOURTH QUARTER
- FSU opened up an 18-point lead early on in the fourth quarter
- Catawba got the deficit to as low as 13, but the Broncos held on for the non-conference victory
