Rock Hill, S.C. —-- The 3rd-seeded Catawba College men's basketball team went on a 14-3 run over the final 4:11 of regulation to force overtime versus top-ranked Lincoln Memorial and held a late defensive stand in overtime to claim its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament title, 61-60, at the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center Friday night.
TEAM STATS
- Lincoln Memorial shot 19-for-46 (41 percent) from the field, while Catawba was 24-for-75 (32 percent) from the floor
- The Railsplitters were 3-for-15 (20 percent) from three-point range; the Catawba Indians were 3-of-24 (13 percent) from deep
- LMU was 19-for-30 (63 percent) at the free throw line, while Catawba went 10-for-16 (63 percent)
- Lincoln Memorial out-rebounded Catawba 42-41, but it was the Catawba Indians who held the 18-6 advantage in second-chance points
- Catawba recorded seven assists to just 11 turnovers, while LMU had six assists to 25 turnovers; the Catawba Indians recorded 20 steals to enjoy a 21-12 lead in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (34-28), fastbreak points (13-8) and the teams tied with 21 bench points apiece
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Kaleb Wallace scored a team-high 14 points in 23 minutes off the bench
- Javeon Jones recorded 11 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals
- Kris Robinson had nine points and five steals
- DeAngelo Epps chipped in eight points, four rebounds and two blocks
- Peyton Gerald added eight points before fouling out of the contest
- Dre Nelson grabbed a team-high nine rebounds off the bench
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
- LMU scored the game's first four points
- Catawba answered with the next five points to take a slim lead
- The Railsplitters took an 11-7 lead at the 14-minute mark
- The Catawba Indians answered with five straight points to regain the lead
- An 8-0 run gave LMU the 24-18 lead at the 2:34 mark to force a Catawba timeout
- The Railsplitters led 28-21 at the break
SECOND HALF
- LMU extended their advantage to 36-23 in the opening four minutes of the second half
- An 8-0 Catawba run capped by Nelson's layup trimmed the Catawba Indian deficit to five
- Two Wes Enis free throws returned the lead to double digits for LMU
- LMU led 48-35 after Enis' three-pointer at the 8:18 mark
- Three straight Catawba buckets cut the lead to 48-41 with 5:20 to go
- Four LMU free throw made it an 11-point lead with four and a half minutes to go
- LMU called timeout after Jones' free throws made it 52-45 with less than two minutes left
- Jones and Wallace layups made it a three-point game; Jones picked the LMU guard's pocket and laid it in with the foul
- Catawba got the deadball offensive rebound on the missed free throw
- Robinson drilled a three-pointer on the inbounds play to take a two-point lead with 48 seconds to go
- Catawba converted one free throw with 15 seconds left in regulation, but Enis dilled the game-tying three-pointer with four seconds to go; Jones' try for win was no good with the teams headed to overtime
OVERTIME
- LMU scored the first four points of overtime to take an early lead
- Jones' layup cut the Catawba deficit to a single point at the 2:16 mark
- Shad Thomas converted the eventual game-tying and game-winning free throws with 1:04 left
- Epps came up with the block on LMU's first of two final possessions; the Railsplitters forced a Catawba miss and tried a potential game-winning three-pointer that was off the mark
