SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba erupted for five goals in the opening 15 minutes and went on to post a 10-1 victory over visiting Emory & Henry in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match on Wednesday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians win for the third straight time, improving to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Wasps fall to 0-3 and 0-1.
It took just two minutes for Salano Birch to put Catawba on top, slotting home a perfect through ball from Tom Savigar. Savigar and Sebastia Cerda-Tous would each add a pair of goals in the early barrage to stake the Indians to a 5-1 edge.
The Indians closed the half with four more goals. Two came from Bautista Vecchi-Ramello with Jacopo Saugher and Saulo Dantas capping the first 45 minutes and the lead ballooned to 9-1 at the break.
Scoring slowed in the second half with Catawba having ample opportunities. Alvaro Blazbuez would tally the final goal for Catawba with just a minutes remaining for the 10-1 final.
Catawba held a 25-3 edge in shots and took nine corners to none for the Wasps. Jado Masambeta scored the Emory & Henry goal, one-timing a clearance off a corner from about 30 yards out into the bottom left side of the goal.
Savigar added two assists to his two goals. Joe Bennett also assisted a pair of goals. A trio of Catawba keepers; Zak Stiffler, Alessandro Malterer and Nick Allen, saw action on the night.
Catawba is on the road for its next match, which will be at Newberry on Saturday at 7 p.m.
