Tigerville, N.C. – The No. 21 Catawba Women's Soccer team continued their stellar start to the 2022 season by putting four goals past North Greenville on the road in Greenville, SC on Saturday night.
Catawba (4-0) was dominant throughout the game, outshooting North Greenville (0-2-1) by a 24-3 margin and keeping the Crusaders on their heels. The Lady Indians took a 2-0 lead into the half and kept their foot on the gas, rewarded with another pair of goals over the final half hour of the game to put the match away for good.
All of Catawba's goals came from different sources, with the first one coming at the 20:01 mark off of a Crusader defender as Hannah Dunn's low cross from the right side of the box found an outstretched foot and took an unfortunate deflection into the bottom corner of the North Greenville goal.
Catawba continued to push and found another goal just a few minutes later at the 24:27 mark, courtesy of Helen Summerell. Center back Kelly Havens picked the ball up deep in the Catawba half and lobbed a beautiful ball over everyone to pick out the run of Summerell behind the defense, and she made no mistake slotting the ball home for her third goal of the season.
There was no rest in the second half, as the Lady Indians continued to push forward in search of more goals. They hit paydirt again as Kasey Hahn finished off a strong Catawba team move that went end to end, beating North Greenville keeper Samantha Montgomery after being set up by Sydney Jimmo.
The final goal, and arguably the best of the best, came courtesy of Lillie Rusher at the 78:07 mark. Rusher picked the ball up in the top left corner of the North Greenville 18-yard box following a setup by Summerell and looped a high shot over Montgomery into the far corner after a sweet touch and turn move.
Crusaders keeper Samantha Montgomery would finish the night with nine saves, with Catawba counterpart Sierra Davis finishing with a save of her own as Catawba's defense notched their first clean sheet of the year. After scoring two goals in their opening game vs. Tampa the Lady Indians have been white hot offensively, scoring five, six, and now four goals respectively over their last three games.
The Catawba Women's Soccer team be back in action at home on Wednesday, September 7th at 5:00 PM, taking on Emory and Henry at the Frock Soccer Complex.
