HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Adrian Scarborough's layup with 2:34 remaining put Catawba up 70-68 and the Catawba Indians did enough to hold on and grab a 74-71 win over Coker on Wednesday night at the DeLoach Center. The Catawba Indians win their South Atlantic Conference opener, improving to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Cobras go to 5-4 and 0-1.
After Scarborough's layup, he added single free throws with 1:08 and 37 seconds left to give Catawba a 72-68 edge. The Cobras had missed four shots with a turnover after Scarborough's layup before Marvin Brumfield's three-pointer with 32 seconds to go to cut the margin to a single point.
Kris Robinson added two free throws for Catawba with 18 seconds left and Javeon Jones' steal in the final seconds iced the win for the Indians.
Scarborough scored 20 points, hitting 9-of-10 shots to lead Catawba. Dre Nelson added a dozen points with Jones and Peyton Gerald each tossing in nine points. The Indians shot 52% in the win and held a 35-31 edge on the glass.
Coker hit a dozen three-pointers in the loss. Brumfield hit five from long range and led the Cobras with 17 points. Tate Mulkey followed with 15 points.
Catawba is in action at Newberry on Saturday at 4 p.m.
