GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Catawba used a first-half goal by Andrew Twanley and upset #2-seed and 15th-ranked Limestone 1-0 in a quarterfinal game of the South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. The win improves the seventh-seeded Catawba Indians to 10-6-2 and advances the Indians into a Friday semifinal match up with sixth-seeded Mars Hill, who upset Lenoir-Rhyne 2-1 in overtime.
Catawba was out-shot 16-5 in the match with the Saints, but Twamley put only one of two Indians shot on goal into the net in the 16th minute. The goal was assisted by Simone Trentin.
The Indians made that goal stand up. Gianluca Tommasi recorded eight saves in posting the shutout. Johann Hipper had one save for the Saints. Limestone had nine corners to two for Catawba.
Catawba will face Mars Hill on Friday night at 8 p.m. at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews, N.C.
