Newberry, S.C. — The Catawba College women's basketball team clinched a South Atlantic Conference Tournament berth on Wednesday when it defeated Newberry on the road in its penultimate regular season contest.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Catawba shot 24-for-45 (53 percent) from the field while holding Newberry to 18-of-54 (33 percent) from the floor
- The Catawba Indians were 6-for-14 (43 percent) from three-point range; the Wolves were 4-of-16 (25 percent) from deep
- Catawba went 13-for-16 (81 percent) from the free throw line, while Newberry was 9-for-14 (64 percent) at the charity stripe
- The Catawba Indians out-rebounded the Wolves 35-25; Catawba turned just six offensive rebounds into a staggering 13 second-chance points
- Catawba recorded 11 assists to 18 turnovers, while the Wolves had 10 assists to 15 turnovers; the Catawba Indians held a slim 17-13 edge in points off turnovers
- Catawba led in points in the paint (26-16) and bench points (31-6)
INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Mary Spry scored a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals
- Sheree Gidney posted 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five rebounds
- Saniya Wilson added 12 points and dished out three assists
- Julie Janus grabbed six boards
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
- Newberry scored the game's first four points in the opening 90 seconds
- A 6-0 Catawba run gave Catawba the lead near the two-minute mark
- Wilson, Kaelyn Allen and Spry splashed home three-pointers to build up a 19-14 lead after 10 minutes
SECOND QUARTER
- Wilson's layup capped a 10-0 Catawba run that pushed their lead to 31-18 at the 4:29 mark
- The lead grew to 17 points on Wilson's layup just 90 seconds later
- Neither team scored in the half's final 102 seconds, with Catawba on top 39-24
THIRD QUARTER
- Janus' three-pointer helped kickstart a 6-0 Catawba run to start the second half that put the lead over 20 points
- Newberry chipped away at the lead with five unanswered points near the midway point
- The Catawba lead returned to 22 points on Gidney's layup towards the end of the period
- Catawba led 55-36 with 10 minutes to play
FOURTH QUARTER
- Catawba's lead reached 25 points when Imani Williams canned a three-pointer near the midway point of the period
- The basket would be Catawba's last points of the game, as Newberry scored the final seven points with the result comfortably in hand
